Ask Yourself

- Am I going into business for the right reasons?
- Do I want my own business simply because I'm tired of working for someone else?
- Am I confusing a business with a job, a hobby, or a status symbol?
- Are business responsibilities likely to conflict with my lifestyle or family priorities?
- Do I have the skills and confidence to successfully run a business?
- Do I have the motivating ability to inspire my employees?
- Can I afford the possible drop in income?
- Am I capable of managing all the day to day issues related to the business?

What's the Business Worth?    Why is it for Sale?

The more you know about your prospective business, the greater your chance for success.
Research will help you avoid two basic mistakes:

Buying a bad business & Paying too much for your business.

- Is the business facing imminent litigation?
- Are regulatory changes likely to affect the industry?
- Are there any environmental issues relating to the business?
- Are any licences, permits or certificates required in the industry?

Passion for the Job

Remember your passion. Never buy or start a business that doesn' hold your interest. You are far more likely to succeed if you're passionate about your work.

Know Your Competitors

Don't rely on market information given to you by the current business owner. A new competitor could be in the process of setting up nearby.

You should not accept a proprietor's word that business is booming if there's no accounting proof to substantiate the claim. If the records or account-keeping systems are poor, you should pay a reduced price. Even if records are poor, there should be a record of purchase.
